Canine Wellness Exam
Beyond the Bark: What Truly Happens During a Canine Wellness Exam?
If you’ve walked by our doors recently or seen our new sign, you know that Sajack Animal Hospital is more than just a building—it’s a labor of love rooted right here in the Front Range. As we open our doors to your four-legged family members, I wanted to take a moment to pull back the curtain on one of the most important things we do here: the Canine Wellness Exam.
When you see "comprehensive nose-to-tail checkup" on our website, it sounds professional, but what does that actually look like when you’re in the room with me?
The "Nose-to-Tail" Philosophy
A wellness exam isn't just about shots; it’s about a physical conversation with your dog. Because our pups can’t tell us when their lower back is a little stiff or if a tooth is starting to ache, we have to be their detectives.
1. The "Once-Over" (That’s actually a "Hundred-Over")
It starts the moment you walk in. I’m looking at how your dog moves—is there a slight favor to one side? Is their coat shiny or a bit dull? We check the "windows to the soul" (the eyes) for clarity, peer into the ears for any hidden irritations, and check that nose for more than just its "boop-ability."
2. The Internal Rhythm
Using my stethoscope isn't just a formality. We are listening for the steady rhythm of the heart and the clear movement of air in the lungs. In a high-altitude environment like ours, keeping a close ear on respiratory health is vital.
3. The Vital "Middle"
I spend a lot of time feeling (palpating) the abdomen. This allows us to check the size and shape of organs like the kidneys and liver, ensuring everything feels exactly as it should. We also check joints and muscle tone—essential for those dogs who spend their weekends hiking with you near Carter Lake or running the trails in Johnstown.
More Than Just Physical: Prevention & Protection
Living in Northern Colorado brings its own set of "wild" variables. Our wellness exams are tailored to our specific backyard.
• Vaccinations: We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We discuss your dog's lifestyle. Does your pup frequent the local dog parks? Do they go camping with you? We’ll customize their protection accordingly.
• Parasite Screening: From the pesky ticks found in the brush to the internal hitchhikers that can affect your family’s health too, we stay ahead of the game with regular screenings.
• The "Golden Years" & Beyond: If your "puppy" is starting to get a little grey around the muzzle, our wellness exams shift focus to mobility, senior bloodwork, and keeping them comfortable so they can enjoy those Colorado sunsets for years to come.
A Note from My Heart to Yours
I know that a trip to the vet can sometimes feel like a chore or a source of anxiety for your dog. That’s why at Sajack, we focus on making this a warm, welcoming experience. We want this to be a place where your dog wags their tail when they see us.
We aren't just treating "patients"—we are looking after your best friends, your hiking partners, and your family members. Whether you're coming from right here in Berthoud or driving in from across the Weld and Larimer county lines, we are so honored to be a part of your dog’s health journey.
We can’t wait to see you (and those wet noses) very soon.
Warmly,
Dr. Peterson
